John Bolton, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, is again calling on the United States to attack Iran even though he acknowledged that doing so would likely ignite a much larger regional war. But, characteristically, he dismissed the costs as worth it, a phrase reminiscent of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s defense of the killing of half a million Iraqi children through sanctions. Bolton claimed, based on evidence that he did not reveal, that Iran could have enough enriched uranium to create a nuclear weapon in six weeks. He made his comments last Thursday before the House Foreign Affairs committee, which is chaired by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who shook his hand afterward and said “I really love John Bolton.”

Bolton, a leading neoconservative, has been calling for attacking Iran for a number of years. As part of his argument, he always maintains that Iran’s acquisition of a nuclear weapon is imminent. He never explains why it hasn’t happened yet, making one suspect that his warnings are baseless and politically motivated. Even the United States intelligence community, in its recently concluded review of the National Intelligence Estimate of 2007, has stated its belief that there is no evidence that Iran has restarted the nuclear weapons program that it abandoned in 2003.

So what does Bolton base his claim on? Intelligence from the Israelis no doubt. Bolton has had a long relationship with the Israeli government and it is presumed also with its intelligence service Mossad. Ironically, the recently retired head of Mossad Meir Dagan, who presumably has seen all of the information that Bolton has access to, has publicly declared that to attack Iran is “irresponsible and reckless.” Bolton clearly believes that his personal access to the representations made by Israeli opinion shapers like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu represent something like the truth regarding what is taking place in the Middle East. On the contrary, Netanyahu presents a point of view that he would like people to believe, as was clearly evident when he addressed the US Congress on May 24. Netanyahu spoke for more than 40 minutes and lied repeatedly to support a narrative that he would like the American audience to embrace.

Bolton and his chickenhawk neoconservative friends, eager for another war to prove their mettle, need to step back and consider just what they have accomplished in the past ten years. Since 9/11 changed the United States forever, there has been a flurry of diplomatic and military activity aimed at remaking the world in America’s image in line with President George W. Bush’s admonition that “You are either with us or against us.” And President Barack Obama has continued the Bush doctrine in terms of aggressive diplomacy and war-making, policies that have been consistently supported by large majorities in congress prior to the recent contretemps over Libya.

If Bolton and his accomplices were to be honest, which has never been a virtue that they have practiced to any extent, they would recognize that nearly everything done over the past ten years, relying on heavy handed threats in lieu of diplomacy and military intervention when that fails, has been disastrous. The countries that have done well recently economically and politically are those that have somehow avoided the heavy handed embrace of Washington and that have instead pursued their own interests quietly and consistently, places like China, India, Turkey, and Brazil.

The balance sheet for the United States is deplorable. The national debt has nearly tripled, from $5.7 trillion in January 2001 to $14.3 trillion currently. If the current operating deficit of $118 billion per month were to be covered in a one year raising of the debt ceiling, that would mean that the national debt would approach $16 trillion by next year, more than 100% of the entire gross national product, putting the US in a category with eleven other nations that have exceeded that psychological limit. Greece, which is currently melting down economically, is at 130%. And the US joins that figure to an unemployment and underemployment level of roughly thirty per cent, which exceeds the level of every European nation. American style underemployment means taking jobs at substantially lower salary or wage levels and frequently without any benefits, making the European unemployed much better off.

And what has driven the United States into the fiscal losers league? Growth in government under both Republicans and Democrats and a failure to fund the wars that both have embraced. Paul Wolfowitz and his coterie of criminals at the Pentagon assured the American people that the Iraq war would pay for itself. That was between $3 and $7 trillion dollars ago depending on how one crunches the numbers. Plus approaching 5,000 Americans killed and hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis with several million more displaced. The current Iraqi government, which is as corrupt as any on earth, cannot even provide as much electricity as Saddam Hussein did before his fall eight years ago. Even the New York Times has taken note that there is something wrong in Baghdad. And to ice the cake from the American perspective, the Iraqi government is closer to the government in Tehran than it is to Washington. So, Mr. Bolton, where’s the victory?

Afghanistan? One trillion dollars gone and a nation building program that is broken. A war that will turn out badly, guaranteed. The United States will leave Afghanistan one way or another and the Taliban will return. They will probably be smart enough not to invite al-Qaeda’s ragtag remnants back in so as to avoid the inevitable American response, which would be devastating, but if they are careful they will again rule in Kabul.

And there is the global war on terror (GWOT), essentially a lie in that terrorism never endangered the United States in any serious way. The GWOT has been the mother of all evils that have beset the United States because it has fueled much of the growth in government to provide what has been promoted as security for the American people. And it has had devastating effect around the world with hellfire missiles in Pakistan turning the nuclear armed country into a basket case that hates Washington more than the Taliban, with more of the same devastation in Yemen and Somalia. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that any country that has been touched by the United States in the past decade has suffered as a result.

The United States of America, a country whose founders sought to create a nation free from the vices of old Europe, has instead been turned into a monster, with a president who declares war unconstitutionally and gets away with it, who attacks and kills people in still other countries without a declaration of war, who approves of extralegal assassination of citizens, who advances the stripping of constitutional rights through military tribunals, and who regularly engages in invocation of states secret privilege to cover up government wrongdoing. Meanwhile the country is on the verge of bankruptcy and the American people have been stripped of many of their liberties in what is rapidly moving towards a police state. Yes, the United States has been the biggest loser over the past ten years.

Given his dismal record, one has to wonder why a Congressional committee wants to listen to John Bolton at all, but the workings of the Imperial City are inscrutable, particularly to the public that foots the bill. Bolton and his friends in congress and the media have brought us nothing but ruin and despair and now they wish to bring us more of the same. The polite answer to their demands should be “No thank you,” though there are certainly more colorful ways to express that sentiment.

U.S. cost of war at least $3.7 trillion and counting

General (Ret) James David (who is mentioned on the cover of the third edition of former Republican Congressman Paul Findley’s ‘They Dare to Speak Out’ about the power/influence of the pro-Israel lobby on the US political system and media) wrote the following intro!

James David wrote:

We need a revolution to rid Washington from all the corrupt politicians, especially those in Congress. Once we get rid of them then we need to go after the lobbyists, the ones who pay off these corrupt politicians. We saw that yesterday when Congress, although faced with dozens of important and critical domestic issues, took time to pass a resolution presented by Israel’s lobby, AIPAC, to threaten to cut off aid to the Palestinians if they proceeded with their attempts for Palestinian statehood U.S. Senate passes resolution threatening to suspend aid to Palestinians – Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News (http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/u-s-senate-passes-resolution-threatening-to-suspend-aid-to-palestinians-1.370341)

Israel’s brutal and illegal occupation of Palestine was the primary reason given by Osama Bin Ladin for the attack on September 11th. It’s Israel who should be threatend with a cut-off to U.S. aid, not the Palestinians. But Israel’s lobby has made sure our politicians put Israel’s interest above all, even above those of the American people. Otherwise, a vote against Israel’s interest is a vote for political suicide. Shielding Israel is an international embarrassment and places U.S. citizens in danger around the world. Israel must begin taking responsibility for its actions and erosion of our national prestige in order to protect Israel must stop.

I agree that we needed to get Bin Ladin and go after Al Qaeda and the Taliban but all these other wars, especially the one in Iraq (Thanks to George W.) were totally unnecessary and illegal. The cost of the Iraq war alone was over a Trillion, but more importantly, over 4000 American fighting men and hundreds of thousands with severe injuries. For what? Our country is on the brink of bankruptcy.

Commentary: Vietnam redux

By ARNAUD DE BORCHGRAVE
UPI Editor at Large

WASHINGTON , June 29 (UPI) — U.S. President Barack Obama has just finished explaining to the world that he is ordering 10,000 soldiers home from Afghanistan this year and another 23,000 by September 2012, which will still leave some 70,000 till 2014, when his secretary walks in, notepad at the ready, and says, “The Taliban called. They said, ‘Take your time.'”

The Ken Cataino cartoon is a reminder Taliban is in no hurry as they know the United States can’t wait much longer to exit because 1) Obama is facing a re-election campaign and 2) an overwhelming majority of Americans have said we don’t belong in Afghanistan and should exit ASAP.

In an open letter to the president, former New York Mayor Ed Koch wrote, “Why are you waiting? We’re going to leave anyway. Bring our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq home. All of them. Now.”

A phased Afghan withdrawal over the next 3 1/2 years is a recipe for disaster. A date or even year certain, for ending involvement is to concede victory to Taliban.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan (and Iraq ) Zalmay Khalilzad calls it “Obama’s Drawdown Disaster.” The Afghan-born U.S. diplomat writes that NATO statistics indicate that violence overall is up by 30 percent in 2011. Clearly, no time to be pulling out 33,000 troops.

“The president’s policy,” he writes, “is significantly narrowing our margin of safety.”

“The U.S. provided better firepower to Afghan resistance fighters opposing the Soviet occupation in the 1980s than it is giving to the Afghan national army today,” Khalilzad argues. “The ANA currently lacks adequate air transport, armor and protected mobility.”

Nor did “the president explain how the U.S. plans to induce Pakistan to shift from supporting the Taliban and other insurgents to facilitating a peace settlement.” In proclaiming that “it is time to focus on nation building here at home,” Obama expressed a clear desire to reduce our commitment.

This is understandable in terms of our domestic and economic circumstances. The danger is that pressures at home will lead the (White House) to accept excessive risks with regards to the war effort but sell it both here and abroad with inflated expectations.

Under the headline “The Coming Afghan Debacle,” The Wall Street Journal’s Bret Stephens writes “The Taliban is jubilant at Obama’s strategy” and “so is Iran .” He quotes Taliban field commander Jamal Khan as delighted by the news of a staggered U.S. withdrawal and “confident that Islamic ideology and religion will trump American technology.”

It is increasingly obvious to the Taliban leadership that Obama shaped the troop downsizing to fit the needs of his 2012 re-election campaign, not to the needs of U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus and his commanders in Afghanistan .

The Vietnam War — for the United States — ended almost four decades ago. The last combatant flew home in March 1973. But America ‘s South Vietnamese allies fought on — with U.S. military assistance voted by Congress. They held their ground with their own air attack and transport support (which ANA doesn’t have).

North Vietnamese commanders, as subsequent memoirs attest, thought they had several more years of fighting before they could hope to take Saigon .

Until, that is, the U.S. Congress, in its infinite wisdom, grew tired of solemn commitments to our former South Vietnamese allies and cut off all military aid. As North Vietnam ‘s legendary commander Vo Nguyen Giap later admitted, he thought Saigon was still at least two years away from falling to communist forces.

Following the congressional vote, Giap quickly improvised an offensive to take Saigon — suddenly handed to him on a silver platter. Fifty-five days later, communist troops marched into Saigon ‘s Presidential Palace unopposed.

Similarly, in Afghanistan , when the last U.S. and allied combat troops leave Afghanistan , the U.S.-trained and -funded Afghan army will need major U.S. financial support — already more than the entire budget of the Afghan government. No one is betting that Congress will continue to underwrite an army in which almost 80 percent cannot read or write.

Next to domestic priorities, the need to sustain an ANA against a Taliban that long since jettisoned its former al-Qaida allies will pale into insignificance — especially in Congress.

In fact, there is much evidence that Taliban supremo Mullah Omar had already disowned his alliance with al-Qaida’s Osama bin Laden when Obama was elected president. Yet Obama endorsed the Afghan war because “that’s where al-Qaida is.”

A series of erroneous assumptions fueled a decade-long war that has already cost half a trillion dollars, following $1 trillion strategic blunder in Iraq .

A ranking Iraqi official recently conceded privately to this reporter that today 1) “sad to say but Iran now has more influence in Iraq than the United States and 2) “hard to recognize but Saddam Hussein’s brutal dictatorship was the best defense against the regional ambitions of Iran’s medieval mullahs.”

Pakistan , now in its noisiest anti-U.S. mood following the U.S. Navy SEALs raid that killed bin Laden, which humiliated the Pakistani army, can see an opportunity for restoring the status quo ante. With its original Taliban creation back in the saddle in Kabul , it will restore sufficient clout to make sure the United States and NATO exit from Afghanistan peacefully.

Pakistan will also return to what it perceives to be a more familiar and comfortable defense posture — Afghanistan as its defense in depth to the west in the event of an Indian frontal attack.

Between now and then, Pakistan ‘s all-powerful Inter-Service Intelligence agency will be back in the driver’s seat facilitating Taliban’s negotiations with the United States for an honorable withdrawal.

Many ignore Vietnam ‘s lessons as the Cold War ended in a global communist defeat that made the loss of Vietnam , Cambodia and Laos seem like minor tactical setbacks. Think again.

The unfolding disaster in Afghanistan, compounded by the calamitous misadventure in Libya, add immediacy to the “Haunting Legacy” of Vietnam — a new must-read book by Marvin and daughter Deborah Kalb on how and why the Vietnam albatross continues to circle the White House.
