Texans in 39 foot boat expected to arrive off coast of Gaza on Tuesday to honor USS Liberty

  • gulfcrossing09-056A retired college professor who has sailed approximately 8,000 miles to the eastern Mediterranean is expected to arrive at his destination within the next 24 hours: the exact location where Israeli forces tried to sink a US Navy ship in 1967, killing or injuring over 200 American servicemen.

Larry Toenjes, 74 years old, is planning to hold a memorial service for those killed on board the ship, the USS Liberty. Israel shelled and torpedoed the ship, an electronics surveillance ship, in an attack that lasted as long as the attack on Pearl Harbor.

While Israel and its partisans have tried to claim that the attack was “a mistake,” a 2003 inquiry by an independent commission led by a retired four-star Navy Admiral, a Rear Admiral, and the highest ranking Medal of Honor recipient in the U.S., a Marine General, announced on Capitol Hill that all the evidence indicated that the attack had been intentional, had consisted of an act of war against the United States by Israel, and that a cover-up had been ordered by the White House.

In addition, the commission found that rescue flights had been recalled by President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. While almost no media covered the Capitol Hill briefing, a full record of its findings are in the Congressional Record and Stars and Stripes military newspaper.

[more information on the incident]

Toenjes, who departed from Galveston, Texas, almost four months ago, is accompanied by a MaGulfcrossing09_041rine veteran who joined him in Malta. Whle there has been concern that Israel might interfere with their voyage as it has other boats in the Mediterranean, ramming and hijacking some, so far Israel seems to be ignoring the voyage.

Toenjes will remain 12 miles offshore, in international waters, where the attack took place.

In a column published by the Galveston News, Toenjes explained that he was undertaking the voyage for two primary purposes: to honor the men who died in service to their country and to try to draw attention to attempts by their surviving families and crewmates to obtain the full government investigation that is legally required but that has been blocked by the powerful Israel Lobby.

Toenjes’ trip is being tracked on the website of the Council for the National Interest (CNI). When he arrives at his destination, the CNI website will stream live his memorial service, which will be carried by satellite phone to a radio program hosted by a Liberty survivor, Phil Tourney.

While the national media have ignored this voyage, Toenjes and Liberty survivors hope that the American public will learn about his undertaking by word of mouth, blogs, and social media.

GIVE RESPECT TO THE MEN OF THE USS LIBERTY!
The more I learn about the Liberty attack, and talk to survivors–and see, and learn about the men that were on that ship—the more I’m feeling such a powerful bond—in my mind and my heart–with these men, and I now can imagine more than ever–the thoughts, feelings, and horrific fear that they were feeling on that dreadful day, and are still feeling to this very day! Every day, I feel their never-ending sadness, restlessness, and their desperation to make this murderous betrayal known to the world, and to finally get their justice for this severe injustice!

You are a beautiful human being Larry!!!
What a great thing you’re doing!!!! Bravo!!!
    Go Larry!!!!

  • American Patriot says:

Israel was living up to it’s motto “By Deception, Thou Shalt Make War” when they attacked this unarmed US vessel. Attacking harmless people is what they do best. They prove it every week or so by bombing or shelling the residents of Gaza.

  • Orygun says:

Let’s hope that the Israeli’s won’t be stupid enough to bully or harrass these good guys when they are in the waters off Gaza. People talk about the Israeli’s controlling both the House and Senate of the United States of America. It must have been the case way back in ’67 as well. What with Pres. Johnson and McNamara apparently taking direct orders from somebody to back off air support to chase the Israeli’s away, and even delaying the rescue mission. Shameless shameless evil that walks the corridors of power in our republic.

  • Zimbabalouie says:

President Obama who is as treasonous as Lyndon Johnson should realize that the Israeli Government and their control over this issue is a failed policy that when reversed will be the first step towards returning the United States of America to the American people. It is time to dissolve American political interest in the terrorist nation Israel.

Every time I hear about the USS Liberty and begin thinking about it my blood
begins to boil. Even worse is when I start thinking of all-and I do mean all-
those American politicians and navy admirals who stabbed those survivors in
the back. I actually believe they are worse than the Israelis if such a thing
could be possible. An old war cry in the US used to be remember the Alamo. We
should keep the war cry but change it to remember the USS Liberty. And then
there is the 5 billion dollars we give to Israel every year while American
citizens live like dogs in the streets of Amerika’s largest cities

Dear America ! Keeeep licking isreal **** and watch more of your people die. Keep at it , yrl will get far !

  • JohnZ says:

Of course Israhell will not guarantee their safety…they will probably try to sink it and blame it on the Palestinians. If it happens the jew owned main stream media will either definitely ignore it or blame it on al CIAduh.

  • Cromwell says:

I wish you good luck on your voyage of remembrance for your countrymen who were brutally murdered by the vile Zionist state of Israel. You may well have better protection now that Turkish naval vessels are patrolling the eastern Mediterranean ;;;;; better protection than the traitor Lyndon B Johnson gave to those American sailors back in 1967. Good Luck and May God go with you.

  • Mannyg says:

God bless all of those involved!

  • jimmy says:

What a brave and honorable pair of fine men they are. Salute!

  • T bagg says:

How sad that even in 1967 our political “leaders” had no spine to stand up to Israel. I hope these Texans return home safely after their memorial service.
