While many in the political class would like to smear Ron Paul on issues having nothing to do with his actual policies, Michael Scheuer, former head of the Bin Laden unit for the CIA, realizes that the major issue in the presidential election of 2012 is peace or war in the Middle East, and that Ron Paul is the only peace candidate. While still with the CIA, Scheuer was the anonymous author of the book, “Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror” (2004), which gained immediate acclaim. Scheuer rejected the Bush administration’s (neocon) claim that the terrorists hated the US because of its principles of freedom and democracy. Rather, it was America’s policies in the Middle East that the Islamic radicals detested. Among those policies, Scheuer cited the United States’ unlimited support for Israel’s occupation of Palestine along with America’s overall interventionist policies in the region.
